Badgers Are Going Abroad
Every year over spring break the UW Rugby Team goes on tour to play other rugby clubs and teams across the U.S. and abroad. Tour is an excellent way to prepare for the 7’s season and an effective way of building team camaraderie, all while meeting fellow ruggers from around the world. Last year we had an amazing experience touring North and South Carolina and playing teams from Clemson University, University of South Carolina, UNC Wilmington, and many others. This year, spring break is March 18th to the 26th and the Badgers are heading to Buenos Aires, Argentina! While in Argentina we will play matches against local club teams while also learning about the culture and history of Buenos Aires during our visit.
For some Badger players, this year will be their first time going on tour with the team, so we asked them what they are most excited about:
“I am looking forward to seeing the culture down there, especially the rugby and mixed martial arts since rugby and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are huge in South America.”
-Dante Pizzini, Sophomore
“I am looking forward to seeing how different parts of the world have different styles of rugby and I am looking forward to learning from each game we play against Argentinian teams. Also, I am excited to see how much our team chemistry will improve while playing and living abroad for a week.”
-Tom Wennerstrum, Sophomore
To provide a little insight to the younger players on the team we asked a couple of our veterans what advice they have for first-time tour goers:
“My advice would be to open yourself up to new experiences, especially since we’re visiting another country. It’s going to be a trip you’ll never forget so you might as well make those memories unique and fun.”
-Dane Fleck, Junior
“Put down your phone and live in the moment of tour and being with your team. Nobody cares about your Snapchat Story or your Instagram post. Get to know people you don’t already know on the team! My first rugby tour was in Texas when I was a Freshman and didn’t know a soul on the team. I now live with 3 of the guys I went with and count them as some of my best friends. Most importantly, have tons of fun!”
-Nate Borchardt, Senior
The Badgers fly out Saturday, March 18th, to stay up to date, make sure to keep an eye on our social media feeds for tour updates!
